Spectre

There are so many choices… Some slick and smooth and glossy and prepared to show me the world after just one touch. One or three can bring me fanciful pleasure, if I only give them an arm and a leg and most of my uncommon sense. I am tempted. So tempted…

For hours, which are centuries hiding behind screen glares and keyboard comfort, I roam the realm of electronic chaos… Temptation is not enough. My frugality and I can’t choose.

A gent clad in blue says, “She won’t get too hot on your lap. And if you are a little rough, she will be able to take it. She’s made of sturdy stuff.”

I am rough. I like sturdy. But she is a tad too steep.

My Piano Man reads the struggle in my face, and reminds me, “Frugality is often steeper, in the long run.” His sage tongue-kisses my qualms, and I start tilting towards temptation…

In the long run, I’m enthralled by her name—Spectre: “a visible incorporeal spirit, specially one of a terrifying nature; ghost; phantom; apparition… some object or source of terror or dread.”

to dance with dark words,
the new Spectre has become
my charming laptop

.
the wee notes…
– I had all sorts of fun writing this haibun—it marks the culmination of my computer shopping, and every word of it is true. Also, it felt nice to write something heartwarmingly creepy… especially after scaring one or three of you half to death with “We’ll Always Have Smoke Signals”.
– Linked to Sanaa’s Prompt Nights—Obsession continually fills or troubles the mind… (by the way, for a short while I wondered if adding this to an obsession poetry challenge would be pushing it a tad much… Then I remembered that most of us are quite obsessed with our electronics *and as always, by “we” I mean “me”). Also linked to the Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, Tuesday Platform.
– And, just so you know, although it was only about a week… I freaking missed you!

(yes, the spirit of my laptop looks rather lethal in a corset *cough*)

  1. Whistles!!❤️💜This is absolutely delightful Magaly 😀 we are all somewhat obsessed with our sparkly gadgets be them smartphones or laptops 😉 especially adore ““Frugality is often steeper, in the long run.” His sage tongue-kisses my qualms, and I start tilting towards temptation” sigh beautifully executed. Thank you so much for participating at Prompt Nights and for your constant love and support ❤️💜

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

PS: Spectre looks gorgeous!! So happy for you!!😘😍

You cheeky minx! 😉 😀 I’m glad to hear you’ve got a new laptop. I’ll have to go back and read the story behind the demise of the old one. (My car broke down last week and it made me all sorts of behind with everything! Desperately trying to catch up!)

    • Too much heat has always been a problem for this relationship… *cough* So I’m glad we’ve found a way to deal with it. It’s just warm enough, right now. 😀

I hope your computer is behaving now!

  3. so glad for your new friend and i am sure you will love as passionately as you did to your first one .
reading your mesmerizing words warm blood crawling in my veins and sensitivity reshapes itself through the wetness in my eyes .
    you are BLESSED

  4. I would be lost without my poetry connections. You guys are my friends and confidants. I love your double entendre poem but more the sentiment behind it.

  5. I’ve had to make that search, and you delineate it perfectly in all its agony and thoroughness. I love that your machine has that name(and wears a corset…) so glad you are back in the realm of those of us whose cyberfriends are sometimes the realest ones.

    • I hope your own search goes as smooth as mine. It didn’t last too long, and I got so much valuable help.

And yes, thank goodness for cyberfriends who are as real as the love and trust they inspire. It seems that more I live, the least I can relate to the people who live next door.

  6. Sounds like you made a good choice of laptop.. I love the way you have captured the uncertainty and the joy of the purchase.

  7. Loving it Magalay, and yes, I did miss you and your wit. My choice is generally HP but this time I chose Dell. So far so good. Mrs. Jim has a light-weight 13″ Toshiba. Sometimes she has bad words for it. My previous laptop crashed beyond recovery when I dropped it onto the tile floor.
One of my favorite song is “The Piano Man” which gives me aspirations to take more piano lessons.
    ..

    • I’ve had Toshiba for a while, and they have been all right. This is my first HP in some time, and I like it a lot. I hope not to have any bad words for it… at least not for a while, lol!

I might have to listen to “The Piano Man” now. 🙂

  8. Omg such a sexy write about a laptop. My husband says buy cheap get cheap, but I do love to haggle a bargain and upcycle. When it comes to electronics and appliances it’s usually worth the extra investment.

  9. I honest don’t know how you managed to make a laptop sound so very thrilling! You are one creative creature, my poetic friend. I think your Spectre is also a Muse…enjoy her! 🙂

  10. I love my PC too (never had a laptop) and I really think it is my best friend….I must admit that ?often said PC takes precedence over my living and breathing best friends – and I worry about that.

    Kind regards
    Anna :o]
