This Lingering Maybe

I carry his voice on my skin.

Earlier, between a bath and the moon, my breasts perked to his words. “I’m yours.”

I left the tub, entered the bedroom. “Were you talking?”

“No,” he smiled, “just typing.”

I walked away, wondering if his fingers had spoken this lingering “Maybe…” stroking the small of my back.

the wee notes…
– To read other installments, visit my Web Serials page. The tales are listed under Ink and Feels.
– I shared 2 paintings with friends on Facebook, and asked them which one they wanted me to write very short tales about. They chose the lady below, suggesting that there is something about her expression that made them (and me) want to know more about her.
– I will (very likely) shared a 55-word story every Thursday. I want to make this series of tales as interactive (and fun) as possible. So… you, my Wicked Luvs, get to choose 1 of 3 possible paths: 1) The voice she feels on her skin is produced by his thoughts/feelings. 2) She is imagining the voice. 3) The voice belongs to a character we’ve yet to meet.
– Written for Hedgewitch’s Friday 55.

  1. Wonderful idea – absolutely intriguing.

As for options? In essence, for me anyhow, they could easily be one in the same, all options open and slipping between the veils of “logic” …. not that it would make writing it easier …. but then, maybe? I think, well it feels this way to me – that this story will write itself within its own voice and choice of options.

    • Indeed, stories (like people) will always be what they need to be, but making choices about where they go gives us the chance to craft a path we might enjoy more. At least, for me. 🙂

I find it quite fun to let my muse dance with others. Even, if in the end she always finds a way to get, well… her own way. *giggles*

  2. You have managed to tell such an involving story about this woman, and meticulously stuck to the 55 word limit–I’m so happy to see your tales added to the Friday funfest, which I have always felt was designed for just this sort of self-challenge. AFA which option, because if it were me this would be true, I say option 2–she is hearing(imagining) a memory. I love the artwork also–a beautiful blue mood to it. Oh- and I hope that, despite the rigors of therapy, you manage to have a kickass weekend.

    • Thank you, Joy. For your words and for the nudge. Fiction, for me, is always a bit more difficult to contain in very short pieces. So, if I don’t have to stay short, I always go longer… Your Friday 55 tells my muse that it can’t go nuts with the word count and that’s a great thing.

  3. First of all, where is Shelle? I have a feeling, that I have to rejoin Facebook, under a fake name! LOL! Please tell her, I say hi, and I am always sending her hugs and love!
Now, for your writing! Very sexy!! I would have to pick 2 or 3. Actually, I love them all! I would be happy with anything you wrote! LOL! Love Shelle’s art!! Big Hugs 🙂

  4. How about one from each? I know, I know, I know! I am just a greedy bitch that loves how your head works and the fine words it sets to paper! But…wouldn’t that be interesting to compare?

  5. He’s just typing. I think we run this game on ourselves, or its in our DNA, or something. Once we’re on that particular scent, we’re off and running no matter what *they* do or don’t do. Or maybe I’m just a jaded bitter old bitch. That works, too. 😉

  6. Oooh option 3 please; it whispers of naughty, mysterious intrigue… and maybe even a delicious haunting. Oh yes, definitely a ghost story. I love ghost stories!☺

  7. Beautiful and intriguing words, my curiosity is stirred.
Yes this painting is so stunning and gentle ..yet also carries a strong pronounced presence! Lovely!
Hmm..I am drawn to # 2….but something tells me #3 is an intriguing adventure. So #3 it is. I am always up for a bewildering option!

Thanks for shining your magic..have a sweet day

    • I’m almost tempted to cheat, and choose 1 or 2 (even if 3 is winning), just to prove how unpredictable obvious can actually be. Hm… maybe, one of these days, Sharon will get her alternate tale after all. 😀

  8. I’m going to pick number 1…

For some reason I’m imagining him connecting with her unconsciously through his writing, in a way that he may not be able to connect in reality. Like the act of creation is uniting them on a metaphysical level.
