Update 1: Witches in Fiction 2015… Prospective Sponsor Drama

A few days ago, I received an unsolicited email from a couple of shop owners who wanted to sponsor Witches in Fiction 2015… Death Rites and Remembrances. I was busy, so I didn’t get to reply to the message until last night. The individuals in question are not readers of my blog; in fact, I’m not sure how they came across it. After reviewing the shop and their request, it was easy to see that we weren’t a good fit. I declined their offer, and thanked them for their interest.

I thought that was going to be the end of it. But this morning, there was a disturbing follow up. One of the owners of the shop sent me a message composed of a string of insults and these words: “…wiccans like you are fake. You talk of helping people but you only help who you like. That’s not what being wiccan is.” I pointed out that it was only one of the owners of the shop, because a second person emailed me (about 15 minutes after the first person did) and apologized. It seems business hasn’t been good lately, and the situation is affecting her partner.

Do I feel bad for them? Yes… but at the risk of sounding rather harsh, I must say that I feel bad for a whole bunch of people whom I still wouldn’t invite into my house. I always refer to my blog as my cyber-home, and I mean that. If I invite a friend to my home, I would never offer him or her food or entertainment or treatment that made me feel uneasy.

There was nothing wrong with the merchandise sold by the shop discussed above, but something about the way their goods and services were described left me feeling kind of uncomfortable. Also, I didn’t appreciate that they sent me the request without taking the time to learn a bit more about my blog or me; if they had, they would’ve known that I’m not Wiccan.

But that’s enough unpleasantness for one post. I just needed to get that out of my chest, in order to move on. Let me, instead, introduce the Witches in Fiction 2015 Sponsors (as of 9/24/2015):

Alchemy & Ashes
Eliora
Gothic Miniatures
SunshineShelle
Three Cats and a Broom

The Wicked Darlings who bring these shops to life either volunteered to sponsor (without me having to ask) or were contacted by me at their prior request. These will be the five individual giveaways. If you are interested in adding your name to the sponsor list, you shall share your giveaway day with moi and become part of a virtual basket. The latter is often the last giveaway, posted a day or two before party day.

If you wish to jump into the Virtual Basket with me, email me (magalyguerrero @ live . com) with a short description of your prospective giveaway.

  1. OMG I actually am feeling a little chuffed I feel like I didn’t knock, just barged on in barely taking time to wipe my feet and shake the sand out of my Docs before I helped myself to some pineapple I found in the fridge hehe… Actually thank you Ms Wicked, I hadn’t realised how some people can think of everything in dollars to be made, opportunities to be seized, partaking in ‘social’ events purely as a marketing exercise 🙁 yes business can be/is hard, but to be nasty if things don’t go your way, well that ain’t good business either (sweet number 2 wrote and apologised)… I am going to have a think about what I will do WIF wise now – with sponsorship comes great responsibility ;)… I am thinking submitting 3 thing (not 13 hehe) 1. an artwork I shall do, and have been musing. 2. I will buy a blank canvas and do a customised piece for the winner (they can dictate) and 3. a $20 US Etsy gift voucher to be spent at any WIF participants shop (EXCEPT MINE which is basically empty at the mo anyways until I rethink my direction) what do you think? So yeah, any more of that pineapple in the fridge?

    • Pineapple must be earned.

Now lady, 3 things? Wow! You can walk into my house and have 3 servings of pineapple, even 5–small servings, I want some left for me. That is extremely generous of you, m’ Shelle. You’ll make a Wicked Darling very, very, very happy. 🙂

  2. One of the things that makes me happiest in life is my Jewish BFF politely correcting people when then assume witch = Wiccan. I know it’s still a bone of contention for some, especially those who aren’t on the ‘net that much, but trying to use some idea of religion (and an incorrect assumption of all things) to shame someone into doing what you want seems like a counterproductive state of affairs.

    • Thank goodness for those few souls that come equipped with a working brain. And yes, things would be so much easier for everyone, if we started to see people, instead of just trying to shape them into what we think they should be.

  3. Wow really, the nerve of some people. I take that little uneasy feeling very seriously; if it makes me feel uneasy or I get that creepy feeling, I say no, back away, get myself out of the situation.

I don’t care how bad business is that does not give anyone the right to disrespect anyone.

    • When we ignore our instincts, we start dying a little. We can often be wrong, but time will set us straight. It’s always best to apologize or give a second chance, than to have our throats cut because we didn’t want to offend anyone.

And yes, being a jerk will not make business better… regardless of the circumstances.

  4. I am sorry I’m not involved this year! I feel really bad! Sorry you had to go through that e-mail! People!!! Magaly, I know I am going through your posts backwards, but I just thought of something, would you like this painting as a giveaway in your party? https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/246689710/crow-art-painting-magical-brew-originai?ref=shop_home_active_1
Let me know ;o) I won’t be offended if you don’t! We have our Thanksgiving on October 11th. And, I don’t know if I would have time to paint anything else.
    Big Hugs ;o)

    • Don’t you ever feel bad (or apologize) because life is happening (and happening good) and keeping you busy. I’m glad to see all what has been going on with you this year. All of it.

Would I ever refuse the opportunity to share the yumminess of your art with the world? Of course I wouldn’t. “Magical Brew” is a stunning piece. I will add it to the basket (with me, Sharon and Rhissanna), and add your Magic Love Crow to the sponsors list. ♥
