A Caged Tongue

Nightmares are me
tongueless, my skull
a cage for thought,

my dying mind screaming,

Burst at the mouth now,
lest I implode later!

my mouth empty
of words,

dead to words.

  1. Your words are so true…And yes, the brain is a cage for all thoughts and especially emotions.. That guttural cry, I remember well and hearing it even shocked me. But when it came out, every emotional hurt, anger came with it. The action was healing..

  2. I’ve just come back and written my poem for this prompt, not having rad prior to posting, and you have written:
    ‘Nightmares are me
    tongueless, my skull
    a cage for thought…’
Our thoughts must have touched at some point because I’ve written about the Little Mermaid, who gave up her tongue for love.
My favourite lines have to be:
    ‘Burst at the mouth now,
    lest I implode later!’

    • Today seems to be the day for “thoughts touching each other”. I wrote a second poem for a different prompt, then realized that a dear friend and I used the same words (and the same rage). Something must be in the air…

  3. This is soo powerful, Magaly! I could feel the tension, the pain and angst in every word especially; “my skull a cage for thought,my dying mind screaming.” Love the artwork! ❤️
    Beautifully rendered.

    Lots of love,

  4. Powerful description of the scream that cannot or will not come…such damage there for so many…let it out…ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  5. Being in a state like you wrote of must be terribly hard for one to exist. Our human world goes round on talk and listen. Thank you for the prompt. It is a good one.
